Baby Bottles for Colic & Gas Buyer Guide

Stomach problems like gas and colic can adversely affect the baby’s health and cause irritation and pain. If your baby suffers from chronic gas or colic issues, it is important to invest in bottles that help in preventing these problems. The main reason behind your baby suffering from these issues is the mixing of milk and water in the bottle which results in bubbles. These bubbles create gas in the stomach and upset the body. There are many types of milk and water bottles available for babies in the market but not all these bottles prevent gas and colic because of their design. There are bottles designed specifically for this problem which has a special vent system to prevent the formation of bubbles as excessive sucking can lead to a vacuum in the bottle. This vent system allows the milk and water to stay separate so that there are no bubbles. This results in a much easier feeding process and a healthier baby. We have put together a Baby Bottles for Colic & Gas Buyer Guide for you to choose best bottle from the many models available in the market.

What to look for when buying a bottle for your baby:

1) Type of venting In the Bottle

When it comes to vented bottles, there are many types of bottles available and each type has its own pros and cons. There are three main types of these bottles namely top-vented, straw-vented, and bottom-vented. In the top- vented model, there are small holes in the nipple which allow the air to pass through to get into the bottle. This type allows less air intake but it is not completely eliminated. The Straw-vented type bottle has a straw which allows air to pass through the bottle and go directly to the bottom. This type of bottle eliminates any air-milk mixing inside the bottle. In the third type i.e. the bottom-vented bottle, there is a valve at the bottom which draws air. This type is best out of the three as it keeps the milk completely air-free.

2) Material Of the Bottle & Nipple

Baby bottles come in a variety of materials like glass, plastic, and stainless steel. It is important to choose the right material for the baby as this can create a big impact on the health of the baby. Keep in mind that the bottle you chose for your baby is made up of BPA-free material as FDA has banned the use of BPA in baby bottles because of its harmful effects. Glass bottles are better as compared to plastic bottles because they do can wear due to use of hot liquids. Plastic also absorbs odors so it becomes all the more difficult to clean them properly. Glass bottles are long –lasting and healthier for the baby. The price of the glass bottle is more than that of plastic bottles but they are completely worth it. Just take precautions that the baby does not drop the bottle as it can shatter and hurt somebody. The material of the nipples also matters. Choose from latex or a silicone nipple depending on your baby’s biting habits. A silicon nipple lasts longer than the latex nipple as it is firmer.

3) Size

The size of the bottle is very important as using the wrong size can cause lesser or more intake than the required amount. Choose the size depending on the age of your baby. Younger babies or newborn children can be given smaller bottles as they have a smaller diet. If you do not want to buy bottles every four or five months, go for bigger bottles but fill the milk or formula as per the requirement only. Generally, baby bottles come in two sizes i.e. 4-5 ounces and 9-10 ounces.

4) Price

Price is one of the lesser important criteria for deciding the model of the bottle you want to buy but it is a cause of worry in a majority of cases. A baby bottle is an investment in the health of your baby and while vented baby bottles are expensive, they are completely worth it as your baby remains healthy and happy when he or she does not experience gas or colic pains. A standard bottle might be cheap but it can harm your baby in more ways than one. Companies try to save money by using low-grade plastic or BPA materials which can cause long-term side effects. Keep this factor in mind but do not make it the deciding factor as your baby’s health is more important than money.

Apart from all these factors, there are some other criteria which will help you choose best bottle for your baby:

  • Check whether the model you want to buy comes with a handle. Babies learn motor skills right from birth and holding their own milk bottle helps them make their grip strong.
  • If you plan to feed breast milk to your baby through the bottle, check if your breast pump fits the model you want to buy.
  • If you want to save some money on switching from bottle to sippy cup, get one which fits both easily. You can replace the nipple with the sippy cup lid when your baby is ready to make the transition. This will make it easy for the babies as they will be already familiar with the bottle.
  • The shape of the nipple also matters because that is what determines the development course of gums and palate. An orthodontic nipple works better in terms of the oral development of the baby.

So these are some of the factors you should consider while buying a bottle for your baby is he or she suffers from gas or colic pains. Keeping all these criteria in mind will allow you to choose best bottle in terms of functionality and material. A baby’s milk bottle is the most important baby items and should be chosen after a lot of thought. Choose the one which suits your baby and relieves gas and colic pains easily.

  1. I think in the end it’s a matter of testing. My daughter reacted very well to Playtex but some of my mommy friends got zero results with it. My Eva was almost free from all that discomfort and as a result she slept way better which meant I got to sleep too. I’ve also bought the MAM bottle but she simply refused to use it so I don’t know how well it works… My advice is to be patient and test things out until you find one that your baby is comfortable with.

  2. I must sound like a horrible mom here because I never even heard of a bottle causing gas!! I may as well see if the store has some of these as well. I know I have seen the Dr Browns ones in the local store where I always run late at night. I am hoping they at least have one of these options for now. I hope between the new bottle and the new formula she can sleep without being waken up to gassy stomach aches.
