Buyers Guide

Buying baby formula can be a little antagonizing, especially for new mothers. There are so many different brands, formulas, types, ingredients, and prices. It is hard to decide which formula is the best for your child and it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what to look for in the best baby formula. Unfortunately it can be a little more difficult when your child is having gas issues.

Allergies

A lot of the time the reason that your baby is having gas issues is because they have an allergy to something. There are many different ways to have the milk protein added into formula other than cow’s milk. Some babies require soy protein to be added into the formula because they are lactose intolerant.  They even make some baby formulas with goat’s milk, but it is not a good replacement for cow’s milk, because normally children allergic to cow’s milk are also allergic to goat’s milk.

Types

Baby formula can come in a couple of different types.

Powdered

The most popular type of baby formula is the powdered form. It typically is a little bit cheaper than ready-to-use formula. The downside of powdered formula is that you have to measure out the water for the bottles accurately, to make sure your baby is getting the right amount of nutrients that they would get from breast milk.

Concentrated Liquid Formula

This type of formula is convenient because you don’t have to wait for any powder to dissolve. But you do still mix it with water to make it smooth enough for your child to drink. Because it is more convenient to use this type of formula it does run a tad expensive.

Liquid Formula

Ready-to-use and just needing to be heated up, this type of formula is the most convenient for new mothers, especially mothers who have gassy and fussy babies. But because it is so convenient for mothers it is also the most expensive type of formula. In addition to that, some liquid ready to use formulas can carry BPA in the plastic bottles that they are which can cause illnesses worse than just gassiness.

Formula Ingredients

When it comes to a great formula for babies that are gassy and experiencing issues with colic, spit up, diarrhea, or constipation, you want to look for formulas that have certain ingredients in it that is best for your baby’s diet.

  • DHA/ARA
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid) are man-made versions of fatty acids that are naturally found in breast milk .These two nutrients promote growth and development for both the babies eyes and brains.
  • Iron
Unless your pediatrician tells you otherwise, all baby formulas should be formulated with iron. Iron can help with your child’s digestive tracks as well as keep your child healthy. If your child is not getting the right amount of iron in their diet then they can eventually develop an iron deficiency.
  • Probiotic/Prebiotic

The number one reason that babies have gas issues is because their little tummies are unable to process the proteins that are in found in breastmilk and nutrients. Which is why probiotics and prebiotics are one of the most important ingredients when it comes to finding a formula for gassy babies. These ingredients help break down the proteins so your child’s stomach doesn’t hurt and cause issues.

  1. Dealing with a newborn and a toddler is hard enough work without having to deal with this as well. She seems very disturbed by the gasses unlike my son who didn’t have any issues with this so it’s obvious I need to try something and fast. I’ve heard a lot of good reviews about Enfagrow so I think I’ll start with that one and if things don’t change, I just have to play the roulette and test them one by one.

  2. Thank you so much for this list! I have been dealing with a gassy baby for 2 weeks now. She just cries all night long and I don’t know what to do to help her. I now know that the formula I was giving her was causing too much bloat in her little belly. Similac sounds like the right choice for my girl. I am going to run out to the store soon as my husband gets home from work. I hope this allows her to get better rest.
